• start XSI (nothing changed so far)
• create a primitive - polygon mesh - sphere (standard settings)
• create a primitive - polygon mesh - grid with one u/v subdivision
• turn it around and move it (be careful that it facing the sphere; see normals)
• create materials:
• sphere: standard phong (here slightly blue)
• grid: standard phong with incandescence intensity 0.5 [so it will emit photons!]
• File - Export - SunFlow
• Be sure to click "Export hidden cameras" or unhide the camera
• leave lights unchecked so the hidden default light will not be exported!
• uncheck "use caustics"; we don't need them now and click "run"
• start SunFlow and 'File' - 'load' the scene
• render [IPR for a fast preview]
 
What to do next:
To get a smooth sphere change the 'Geometry Approximation' - 'Subdivision' value (press +/- or under "Selection")
play with the GI settings
